Malaysia Visa-Free Entry: The High Commission of India in Kuala Lumpur has issued a fresh advisory warning Indian nationals against using Malaysia’s 30-day visa-free entry facility to search for or take up jobs.
The advisory, issued on September 22, 2026, comes after the High Commission observed a noticeable increase in Indian nationals travelling to Malaysia under the visa-free facility with the intention of seeking employment.
The mission also cautioned travellers about unscrupulous agents offering fake job promises, which can leave people facing immigration violations, exploitation and other legal problems.
30-Day Malaysia Visa-Free Entry Is Only for Tourism
According to the High Commission, the 30-day visa-free facility available to Indian passport holders is intended for tourism and social visits only.
It does not provide permission to work in Malaysia. Indian nationals who travel to Malaysia for employment must obtain the appropriate documentation before travelling, including a valid work permit or Visa With Reference (VDR).
The High Commission has specifically advised Indians not to rely on agents who claim that travellers can enter Malaysia as tourists and then find or start a job there.
Fake Job Offers Can Lead to Serious Problems
The advisory warned that many Indian nationals are being misled by agents making false employment promises.
According to the High Commission, such situations can result in:
- Overstaying the permitted period
- Illegal immigration status
- Exploitation
- Detention by authorities
- Legal action under Malaysian immigration laws
The mission therefore urged Indian nationals to verify employment arrangements and obtain the required authorisation before travelling to Malaysia for work.
What Documents Should Tourists Carry?
Indian travellers visiting Malaysia genuinely for tourism or social visits have also been advised to carry valid and verifiable travel documents.
The High Commission has recommended that tourists carry:
- A confirmed return ticket
- Hotel booking details
- Proof of Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) submission
- A passport with at least six months of validity
Travellers are required to submit the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card online at least three days before arrival, according to the advisory.
Indians Going to Malaysia for Work Need Proper Permission
The High Commission has reiterated that Indian nationals planning to work in Malaysia should not travel using the visa-free tourism facility.
Instead, they should secure the appropriate work permit or Visa With Reference (VDR) before travelling for employment.
The advisory is particularly relevant for people who receive job offers through agents or social media and are told that they can enter Malaysia as tourists and arrange employment after arrival.
Why Has India Issued This Warning?
The advisory follows what the High Commission described as a noticeable increase in Indian nationals arriving in Malaysia through the 30-day visa-free facility to seek employment.
The mission’s warning highlights the risks associated with relying on unofficial recruitment agents and travelling without the immigration permission required for employment.
For Indian tourists, the key message is straightforward: visa-free tourist entry does not mean permission to work in Malaysia.
