Ahmedabad, September 21, 2026: The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs Department has seized 8.913 kg of hydroponic cannabis from a passenger arriving from Bangkok at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad.
The passenger was intercepted based on intelligence inputs, following which Customs officials conducted a detailed search of the individual’s check-in baggage.
Cannabis Hidden Inside Trolley Bag
According to officials, the suspected contraband was concealed inside a trolley bag and hidden between clothes to avoid detection during airport security checks.
The cannabis was reportedly packed in 14 specially prepared airtight packets. The recovery was made during the baggage inspection conducted by the Customs team. Hydroponic cannabis, also commonly referred to as marijuana or weed, was seized by the authorities following the discovery.
Passenger Arrested Under NDPS Act at Ahmedabad Airport
The Customs Department seized the recovered substance under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The passenger was detained and subsequently arrested in connection with the alleged international drug smuggling attempt. Authorities are now carrying out further legal proceedings and investigating the circumstances surrounding the consignment.
Probe Underway to Trace Drug Supply Network
Officials have launched an investigation to determine the source of the cannabis in Bangkok and identify the intended recipient in Ahmedabad.
The probe will also examine whether the passenger was connected to a larger international narcotics supply network or local distributors operating in Gujarat. The seizure highlights ongoing efforts by the Customs Department to prevent international drug trafficking through Ahmedabad airport and strengthen surveillance of passengers arriving from overseas destinations.
