NTA Waives Fees and Retains Original Test Centers for Over 22 Lakh Students
NEET UG 2026 Re-Exam Date: The National Testing Agency (NTA), with official approval from the Government of India, has put an end to weeks of anxiety for over 22 lakh medical aspirants. The agency has formally announced that the rescheduled National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) 2026 will be conducted on Sunday, June 21, 2026.
The nationwide medical entrance examination, originally held on May 3, 2026, was cancelled by the Ministry of Education following a high-level investigation into an alleged institutional paper leak and widespread administrative irregularities. The case has since been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for an exhaustive, comprehensive inquiry.
No Fresh Registration Fees Required for Candidates
In a significant relief to families and students who have been under immense emotional and financial stress, the NTA has clarified that candidates do not need to go through the registration process all over again.
Key Relief Measures for Aspirants
- No Extra Fees: Students will not be charged any additional or hidden examination fees for appearing in the June 21 retest.
- Validation of Older Credentials: All previously completed registrations, application profiles, and historical payment receipts will remain completely valid.
- Retained Exam Centers: By default, the examination city and preferences originally selected by the candidates during the initial registration process will remain unchanged and active.
NTA Opens Limited Window for Exam City Changes
Recognizing that many students travel across states or relocate to coaching hubs during the summer months, the NTA has launched a temporary correction window on its official portal (neet.nta.nic.in).
Candidates who wish to alter their present address or choose a more accessible exam city must complete their modifications before the strict deadline of May 21. For students who choose not to make any changes, the system will automatically freeze their previous location choices.
New Exam Format: 15 Minutes Extra Time in Offline Mode
While Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan hinted that major national entrance tests will gradually transition to a Computer-Based Test (CBT) format starting next year to mitigate malpractice risks, the June 21 re-test will proceed in the traditional offline pen-and-paper mode. Due to the massive volume of registered candidates, setting up an entirely digital infrastructure on such short notice is not logistically viable.
15 Minutes Buffer Added
To assist students with better time-management and reduce test-day anxiety, the NTA has added an extra 15 minutes to the total duration. The revised examination window will run for 3 hours and 15 minutes (from 2:00 PM to 5:15 PM IST). The exam will continue to be provided across 13 regional languages, including English, Hindi, and Gujarati.
Students must strictly note that reporting desks will close at exactly 1:30 PM, and no late entries will be permitted under any circumstances due to enhanced multi-layered biometric security protocols.
Impact on Academic Calendar and Counseling Schedules
The cancellation and subsequent rescheduling of India’s largest medical entrance exam will inevitably delay the subsequent stages of the medical education calendar.
Medical experts and academic counselors estimate that the centralized Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) rounds, alongside various state-level medical counseling procedures, will be pushed back into late July or August 2026. This delay will subsequently shift the official commencement of the freshman academic session for MBBS, BDS, and allied medical programs across the country.
Stay Safe From Misinformation: Trust Only Official Channels
In its official public notice, the NTA heavily cautioned both parents and students against falling prey to speculative social media posts, unverified WhatsApp forwards, and fake notifications circulating online.
“We strongly urge all stakeholders to rely exclusively on official notices published via the NTA website or verified public communication channels. Do not engage with malicious platforms designed to spread confusion during this critical preparation phase,” the NTA official advisory stated.
