Ahmedabad Airport: A woman arriving from Sharjah was apprehended at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad for allegedly attempting to smuggle gold worth around ₹83 lakh into India without declaring it or paying the applicable customs duty.
The action was taken by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs Department after officers intercepted the passenger based on passenger profiling.
499.5 Gram Gold Chain Seized
According to the Customs Department, officers recovered a 499.5-gram gold chain from the passenger during a search. The seized gold was found to be of 24-carat purity and was valued at approximately ₹83 lakh. The gold chain was allegedly concealed inside the woman’s high-neck sweater, according to the Customs Department. The passenger had arrived at Ahmedabad Airport from Sharjah on Sunday when AIU officers intercepted her.
Gold Allegedly Not Declared to Customs
Officials said the passenger allegedly attempted to bring the gold into the country without declaring it to Customs authorities or paying the required customs duty. A Customs officer reportedly said that the case appeared to be one of wilful non-declaration of the gold article, while further investigation would determine the complete circumstances of the case.
Passenger Released on Bail
Following the seizure, the passenger was released on bail, while the investigation into the case continues. According to information reported by DeshGujarat, the woman is a medical professional working in the Gulf and had completed both her graduate and postgraduate studies in Gujarat.
The authorities are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged non-declaration and the manner in which the gold was carried.
