Vadodara-Mumbai Bullet Train: India is moving closer to its first indigenously manufactured bullet train, with track trials expected to begin in May or June 2027. The announcement was made by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during the ‘NaMo for Viksit Bharat’ event in Vadodara.
The development marks an important milestone for India’s high-speed rail ambitions and the government’s push towards domestic manufacturing under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
Vadodara-Mumbai Bullet Train Trial Run Expected in May-June 2027
According to the Railway Minister, the first body frame of India’s indigenous high-speed train has been completed and sent for a squeeze test to assess its structural strength.
The train is expected to reach the tracks for testing by May or June 2027. Following the initial track trials, the testing process is expected to continue for around two to four months before the train is considered for inauguration and commercial operations.
The announcement comes as construction work on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor continues across Gujarat and Maharashtra.
Vadodara to Mumbai in Just 90 Minutes
One of the biggest attractions of the bullet train project will be the significant reduction in travel time.
The distance between Vadodara and Mumbai is around 391–392 km. At present, even fast train services take considerably longer to cover the route. Once the bullet train becomes operational, the Vadodara-Mumbai journey is expected to take approximately one and a half hours.
The proposed high-speed service is designed to operate at speeds of up to 350 kmph, making it significantly faster than conventional railway services.
508-Km Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Corridor
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor stretches approximately 508 kilometres and is being developed to provide faster connectivity between Gujarat and Maharashtra.
The corridor will have 12 major stations, including:
- Mumbai (BKC)
- Thane
- Virar
- Boisar
- Vapi
- Bilimora
- Surat
- Bharuch
- Vadodara
- Anand
- Ahmedabad
- Sabarmati
The project is being developed in phases, with sections in Gujarat expected to become operational progressively.
Surat-Vapi Section Expected to Progress by December 2026
Construction on the corridor is advancing, with the Surat-Vapi section expected to reach a major construction milestone by December 2026. The first operational sections are expected to be introduced in phases before the complete Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor becomes operational.
Indigenous Technology Marks Major Milestone for India
The upcoming train is significant because it is being developed and manufactured domestically, reflecting India’s growing focus on building high-speed rail technology within the country. The successful completion of the prototype, followed by testing, could mark a major step in India’s development of indigenous high-speed railway technology.
If the trials and required clearances progress as planned, the Vadodara-Mumbai Bullet Train could move towards commercial operations later in 2027.
For Gujarat, the project is particularly significant as several major stations including Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara and Ahmedabad are located along the corridor. Faster rail connectivity could substantially change travel between major cities of Gujarat and Mumbai once the service is fully operational.
