The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe weather warning for several parts of Gujarat, placing multiple districts on high alert due to a forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall. According to the latest bulletin from the meteorological department, both Orange and Yellow alerts have been put in place from May 30 to June 3 to warn residents and local authorities of impending turbulent weather conditions.
Distributing the Alerts: Regions Most At Risk
A combination of active cyclonic circulations and strong moisture winds building up from the Arabian Sea has accelerated pre-monsoon and early monsoon activity across the state.
The Orange Alert (Be Prepared)
The IMD has placed several districts under an Orange alert, indicating that residents should remain highly vigilant and prepared for significant disruptions. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is anticipated in isolated locations across:
- South Gujarat: Valsad, Navsari, Surat, Dang, and Tapi.
- Central & North Gujarat: Sabarkantha, Aravalli, Mahisagar, and Dahod.
- Union Territories: Daman and Dadra & Nagar Haveli.
The Yellow Alert (Be Aware)
Concurrently, a Yellow warning has been flagged for parts of Central Gujarat and the Saurashtra peninsula. Localized heavy downpours accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty surface winds reaching 30–40 kmph are likely to impact:
- Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Anand, Kheda, Panchmahal, Vadodara, and Chhota Udepur.
- Amreli, Bhavnagar, and Gir Somnath in the Saurashtra region.
Expected Weather Breakdown (May 30 – June 3)
- May 30 & May 31: The initial phase of the spell will hit the coastal and southernmost districts of the state, slowly spreading inwards toward central manufacturing and urban hubs like Surat and Vadodara.
- June 1 & June 2: The intensity of the downpour is projected to expand into Northeast and North Gujarat. Sabarkantha and Aravalli may see localized flooding in low-lying rural belts.
- June 3: While the system is expected to gradually lose strength, coastal pockets of Saurashtra and South Gujarat will continue to receive intermittent heavy showers.
Local Administration and Fishermen Advisory
With the threat of waterlogging, flash floods in small seasonal streams, and uprooting of weak structures due to strong winds, municipal corporations across Ahmedabad, Surat, and Vadodara have activated emergency helplines and stormwater drainage management units.
Furthermore, because of the rough sea conditions generated by the active weather system, the IMD has issued a strict advisory warning to fishermen not to venture out into the North and Central Arabian Sea off the Gujarat coast through June 3. Commuters are advised to track weather modifications before travelling through high-risk districts.
