Surat: The long wait for Surat Metro services may soon come to an end, with preparations underway to begin passenger operations on the Dream City–Althan Tenement stretch by November-end 2026. The 8.5-km section of Surat Metro Corridor-1 has entered the final stages of testing and operational preparations.
The proposed opening of this priority stretch is expected to mark a major milestone for Surat’s public transport network. If the remaining technical, safety and administrative procedures are completed as planned, passengers could get their first opportunity to travel by metro around Diwali or by the end of November 2026.
Surat Metro Dream City to Althan Route: 8.5-Km Priority Stretch
The first section planned for passenger operations will connect Dream City with Althan Tenement through an elevated metro corridor.
The route is part of Corridor-1, which runs broadly between Sarthana and Dream City. According to the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC), Surat Metro Phase-1 consists of two corridors covering a total network length of 40.35 km with 38 stations. The Dream City–Althan priority section is approximately 8.5 km long and includes seven stations.
Major Stations on the Priority Stretch
The route includes:
- Dream City
- Convention Centre
- Bhimrad
- Surat Women ITI
- VIP Road
- Althan Gam
- Althan Tenement
These stations are part of the elevated section of Corridor-1. GMRC’s official alignment map confirms the stations along the Dream City–Althan portion of the corridor.
Surat Metro Trial Runs Already Underway
The project has already moved beyond basic construction, with trial runs conducted on the 8.5-km section. GMRC officially announced the beginning of trials on the Dream City–Althan stretch in April 2026. The trials are being used to test important railway systems before commercial passenger operations begin.
During the current testing and preparation phase, systems including tracks, power supply and signalling are being checked to ensure safe and reliable metro operations. Following the trials, authorities are focusing on completing remaining station-related works, ticketing arrangements and passenger facilities.
Metro Service Could Start Around Diwali
The latest reports indicate that Surat Metro services on the priority section could begin around Diwali or by November-end 2026. However, the exact commercial launch date has not yet been officially announced. Passenger operations will depend on the completion of required safety and administrative clearances. This means commuters should treat November-end 2026 as the current expected timeframe rather than a confirmed inauguration date.
Which Areas Will Benefit From Surat Metro?
The initial service will provide a new public transport option for residents and commuters around several rapidly developing parts of southern Surat.

Surat Metro Project Covers 40.35 Km
The complete Surat Metro Phase-1 project is being implemented by the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC).
The project consists of two corridors:
Corridor-1: Sarthana to Dream City
This is the North-South corridor and includes both elevated and underground portions.
Corridor-2: Bhesan to Saroli
This corridor forms the East-West connection and is entirely elevated. GMRC’s official project information lists 38 stations and 40.35 km of total route length, including 33.88 km of elevated track and 6.47 km of underground metro.
Underground Metro Work Also Progressing
While passengers may first experience the elevated Dream City–Althan section, construction is also progressing on the underground portions of Surat Metro.
One of the challenging sections is the underground route connecting areas around Chowk Bazaar and Surat Railway Station. The underground portion will eventually bring metro connectivity into some of the city’s busiest and most densely populated areas. This will be particularly important for improving connectivity between the metro network and major transport and commercial hubs in central Surat.
What Will Surat Metro Mean for Daily Commuters?
The introduction of metro services is expected to provide Surat residents with another fast and convenient public transport option. The system is designed to complement existing public transportation, including city buses and BRTS services.

Although the first operational stretch is expected to open later this year, official passenger timings, fares and detailed ticketing information for commercial operations have not yet been announced.
Commuters should therefore avoid relying on unofficial metro timetables or fare information circulating online until GMRC releases the final details. The official GMRC website currently lists Surat Metro Phase-1 as a project under development, while its latest updates include ongoing commissioning and operationalisation work.
A Major Milestone for Surat
The expected opening of the Dream City–Althan metro stretch will be a significant moment for Surat. For years, the city has been developing its metro network to meet the needs of its rapidly growing population and expanding economic zones. The beginning of passenger operations would transform the project from a major infrastructure construction programme into a functioning urban transport system. If the remaining clearances and preparations are completed on schedule, Surat residents could finally experience metro travel by Diwali or November-end 2026.
The priority stretch will be only the beginning, with the larger Surat Metro network expected to eventually connect major parts of the city through its two corridors.
