Citizens Advised to Take Precautions During Peak Heat Hours
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and local authorities have issued Yellow and Orange heatwave alerts for Ahmedabad city from May 7 to May 11, 2026, as temperatures are expected to rise sharply in the coming days.
According to official weather forecasts, the maximum temperature in Ahmedabad could touch 44°C during this period. Authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours.
The alert comes as Gujarat continues to witness intense summer conditions, with several cities recording temperatures above normal levels. Health experts have warned that prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke, especially among vulnerable groups.
Authorities have appealed to residents to strictly follow safety measures to avoid heat-related illnesses.
Avoid Going Outdoors Between 12 PM and 4 PM
Citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary travel or outdoor work during the afternoon, when temperatures remain at their highest. Exposure to direct sunlight during these hours can significantly increase the risk of heatstroke.
Stay Hydrated Throughout the Day
Doctors recommend drinking plenty of water even if you do not feel thirsty. Consuming fluids regularly helps maintain body temperature and prevents dehydration during extreme heat conditions.
People are also encouraged to consume seasonal fruits, coconut water, lemon water, and ORS solutions to stay hydrated.
Wear Light-Coloured and Comfortable Clothes
Experts suggest wearing loose-fitting, cotton, and light-coloured clothes to reduce heat absorption and maintain body comfort during hot weather.
Using caps, umbrellas, sunglasses, and scarves while stepping outside can also help protect against direct sunlight.
Elderly, Children, and Pregnant Women Need Special Care
High-Risk Groups More Vulnerable to Heatwave
Health officials have highlighted that senior citizens, children, pregnant women, and people suffering from chronic illnesses are more vulnerable during heatwave conditions. Families are advised to ensure that elderly members remain indoors in ventilated areas and consume sufficient fluids throughout the day.
Children should avoid outdoor sports and activities during afternoon hours, while pregnant women are advised to limit exposure to extreme temperatures.
Heatwave Conditions Increasing Across Gujarat
Ahmedabad is not the only city facing severe summer temperatures. Several regions of Gujarat, including parts of North Gujarat and Saurashtra, are also expected to experience intense heat conditions over the coming days.
Weather experts state that dry winds and clear skies are contributing to the continuous rise in temperatures across the state.
The Gujarat government and municipal authorities are monitoring the situation closely and spreading awareness through public advisories and emergency preparedness measures.
What Are the Symptoms of Heatstroke?
Immediate Medical Attention is Important
Citizens are urged to seek medical assistance immediately if they notice symptoms such as:
Common Heatstroke Symptoms
- High body temperature
- Severe headache
- Dizziness or fainting
- Nausea or vomiting
- Excessive sweating or dry skin
- Rapid heartbeat
- Confusion or weakness
Medical experts advise moving the affected person to a cool place, giving water if conscious, and contacting emergency services immediately.
Ahmedabad Residents Urged to Stay Safe
Authorities have reiterated that public safety remains the top priority during the ongoing heatwave conditions. Citizens are requested to follow official advisories carefully and stay updated with weather forecasts.
With temperatures expected to remain high till May 11, residents are advised to prioritize health, hydration, and safety measures to avoid complications caused by extreme heat.
