Daman Civil Airport: The coastal Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu is on the verge of script a historic chapter in its regional transport connectivity. In a massive boost to local tourism and industrial infrastructure, Daman’s brand-new, state-of-the-art Rs 97-crore civil airport is fully prepared for a grand commercial inauguration in early June 2026.
The milestone development transitions the location from a strictly restricted military defense site into a modern civilian gateway. Local administrative officials have hinted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is highly likely to officially inaugurate the state-of-the-art terminal building during his upcoming regional visit. Following the launch ceremony, the very first commercial flight out of Daman is scheduled to depart directly for New Delhi.
Evolution of Infrastructure: From Coast Guard Airstrip to Commercial Terminal
For over three decades, Daman’s air corridors were utilized almost exclusively for defense operations. Originally built in the 1950s during the Portuguese colonial administration, the infrastructure was taken over by the Indian Armed Forces in December 1961. Since 1987, the facility has operated primarily as the Indian Coast Guard Air Station Daman, serving as a critical base for maritime reconnaissance and Search and Rescue (SAR) operations.
While defense personnel maintained the primary runway, civilian tourists and industry professionals had to undertake tedious 3-to-4-hour road journeys to Surat or Mumbai to catch a domestic flight. The construction of the dedicated civil enclave permanently resolves this major logistics barrier.
Inside the New Daman Civil Airport: Capacity and Key Amenities
Spanning a massive 1.01 lakh square metre site, the newly constructed civilian area features an aerodynamic terminal building spread cleanly across 5,460 square metres. Designed by a premier Indian architectural firm, the terminal blends modern design elements with the coastal aesthetic characteristics of South Gujarat.
Key Operational Specifications
- Passenger Capacity: The primary passenger waiting area comfortably accommodates 180 travelers simultaneously, supplemented by a high-end VIP lounge designed for 16 guests.
- Check-In Efficiency: To ensure smooth, delay-free boarding, the terminal houses 12 fully digital check-in counters, with pre-built infrastructure allowing expansion up to 16 counters based on future passenger traffic.
- Aircraft Parking Enclave: The newly constructed commercial apron provides ample parking berths for two large Airbus A320-size commercial passenger jets simultaneously.
- Ground Logistics: The outer zone features an organized public parking layout capable of housing up to 57 commercial and private vehicles.
Management responsibilities for the civilian operations have been officially transferred via a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to the Airports Authority of India (AAI). To ensure smooth execution in the initial operational phase, the Surat Airport Director has been assigned administrative oversight over the Daman station.
Strategic Routes: Linking Daman with Major Economic Hubs
Aviation industry insiders reveal that domestic carrier Alliance Air has secured initial deployment clearance to operate commercial flights from the territory.
| Phase | Core Flight Route | Target Market Segment |
| Inaugural Phase | Daman – New Delhi (Direct) | Bureaucrats, Corporate Executives, Long-distance Tourists |
| Expansion Phase | Mumbai – Daman – Ahmedabad | South Gujarat Business Communities, Weekend Travelers |
The expansion into Mumbai and Ahmedabad will follow soon after the launch, drastically shortening travel times for industrial workers moving between the manufacturing clusters of Vapi, Silvassa, and Sachin. Furthermore, the direct link will provide a massive financial catalyst for Daman’s local hospitality market – famous for its scenic beaches, historic Portuguese forts, and relaxed tax structures – positioning it as an incredibly lucrative weekend getaway for travellers nationwide.
