The Ahmedabad–Mehsana Highway in Gujarat is set to undergo a major upgrade, with the existing four-lane road being widened to eight lanes under a project estimated to cost ₹2,600 crore. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the project on October 30, 2026.
The highway expansion is expected to improve connectivity between Ahmedabad and North Gujarat, reduce travel time and make daily journeys safer and smoother.
50-Km Highway Stretch to Be Upgraded
The project will cover approximately 50 km of State Highway-41, from Adalaj to Palavasna Circle in Mehsana district. Once completed, the upgraded highway is expected to benefit commuters and residents of Mehsana, Patan and Banaskantha districts. The route currently handles more than one lakh vehicles every day, according to an earlier state government assessment. The existing four-lane highway was originally developed in 1999, with service roads on both sides.
Major Features of the Ahmedabad–Mehsana Highway Project
The ₹2,600 crore project includes several infrastructure improvements:
- Eight-lane main carriageway: The existing four-lane highway will be expanded to eight lanes.
- Service roads: Seven-metre-wide service roads will be developed on both sides.
- Bridge widening: Existing bridges, pipe culverts and box culverts will be widened.
- Elevated corridor in Kalol: A 6.10-km elevated corridor will be constructed through Kalol city.
- Eight flyovers: Flyovers are planned at Shertha, Rajpur Bhasaria, Jagudan, Mewad and other locations.
- Eight underpasses: These are planned at Shertha, IFFCO Kalol, Kalol city, Chhatral, Nandasan and Ganeshpura, among other locations.
- New railway overbridge: A four-lane railway overbridge will be built at Vaghara, next to the existing Hayat Kalol railway overbridge.
6.10-Km Elevated Corridor Through Kalol
One of the key components of the project is a 6.10-km elevated corridor through Kalol city. The elevated stretch will include five overbridges and flyovers. It is designed to allow highway traffic to pass through the city while reducing interference with local traffic movement. This is expected to help address congestion in Kalol, particularly for vehicles travelling between Ahmedabad and North Gujarat.
Eight Flyovers and Eight Underpasses Planned
The project also includes eight flyovers at different locations. Two flyovers are planned at Shertha, while others are proposed around Rajpur Bhasaria, Jagudan and Mewad, along with flyover structures at Vaghara on the Kalol–Chhatral stretch.
Eight underpasses will also be developed to improve traffic movement and provide crossings at important locations along the highway.
How Will Ahmedabad–Mehsana Highway Project Benefit North Gujarat?
The Ahmedabad–Mehsana highway is an important road link connecting Ahmedabad with several parts of North Gujarat.
The expansion is expected to:
- Improve road connectivity between Ahmedabad and Mehsana.
- Reduce congestion on a route carrying over one lakh vehicles daily.
- Support smoother movement of private vehicles and commercial traffic.
- Improve access to Mehsana, Patan and Banaskantha.
- Reduce traffic disruption in Kalol through the elevated corridor.
- Improve road safety and traffic flow through upgraded infrastructure.
The project is expected to strengthen road connectivity across North Gujarat. However, the actual reduction in travel time will depend on the completed infrastructure and traffic conditions.
The ₹2,600 crore Ahmedabad–Mehsana Highway expansion is a major road infrastructure project for Gujarat. With an eight-lane carriageway, a 6.10-km elevated corridor, flyovers, underpasses and upgraded bridges, the project aims to improve travel between Ahmedabad and North Gujarat.
The foundation stone has been laid, and commuters will be watching for further updates on construction progress and the project’s completion timeline.
