SURAT Bhajiya Controversy: A controversy has erupted in Surat after the Surat Municipal Corporation’s (SMC) elected BJP wing reportedly spent ₹750 per kg on bhajiyas for a general body meeting, even though the popular Gujarati snack is available in local markets for approximately ₹350 to ₹500 per kg.
The reported price difference has triggered criticism from the Congress, which has termed the matter the “Bhajiya Scandal” and questioned the use of taxpayers’ money for refreshments.
SMC Reportedly Purchased Over 131 Kg of Bhajiyas
According to the purchase details in the report, the SMC procured more than 131 kg of bhajiyas at ₹750 per kg. The expenditure on bhajiyas alone reportedly crossed ₹1 lakh.
The vendor had initially quoted ₹800 per kg, but the corporation reportedly received a discount of only ₹50 per kg despite placing a bulk order. The expenditure on Surat’s famous festive sweet, Ghari, was approximately ₹20,000, considerably lower than the reported bhajiya bill.
Refreshments Arranged for 350–400 People
The refreshments were reportedly arranged during a general body meeting held ahead of Diwali and Chandi Padvo. Around 350–400 people, including corporators, civic officials, journalists and other staff members, attended the meeting.
Surat Mayor Defends the Expenditure
Surat Mayor Mayaben Mavani defended the purchase, stating that quality and public health were given priority over cheaper alternatives. She reportedly said the bhajiyas were of excellent quality and practically oil-free. She also argued that the food served was substantial enough to be considered almost a full meal for those attending the meeting.
Congress Questions Spending of Public Money
Former Congress corporator Aslam Cyclewala criticised the reported expenditure, arguing that bhajiyas available in the market at much lower prices were purchased at nearly double the rate. He questioned the justification for the spending and alleged that public money was being used extravagantly while residents continued to raise concerns about civic infrastructure and other local issues.
Demand for an Inquiry
The controversy has also led to demands for an inquiry by the Municipal Commissioner and the SMC audit department. Questions are being raised over the purchase price, vendor selection and justification for the expenditure.
The issue has brought public spending and accountability at the Surat Municipal Corporation into focus. Further clarification from the civic administration and any findings from an official inquiry will be important in establishing whether the purchase followed the required procedures.
