BJP Registers Massive Victory in Surat Municipal Corporation Election 2026
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has once again retained its dominance in the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) by winning a massive 115 out of 120 seats in the 2026 civic body elections.
The saffron party, which continues to remain the strongest political force in Gujarat, delivered an overwhelming performance across Surat’s 30 wards, leaving the opposition far behind. While BJP secured 115 seats, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) managed to win 4 seats, and Congress could secure only 1 seat. No other party or independent candidate succeeded in opening their account.
The final results clearly reflect BJP’s continued political strength and voter trust in one of Gujarat’s fastest-growing cities.

High-Stakes Election with 483 Candidates in the Fray
This year’s SMC election witnessed intense political competition with a total of 483 candidates contesting across all 120 seats. BJP fielded candidates on all 120 seats, while Congress nominated 117 candidates and AAP fielded 111 candidates.
According to the Gujarat State Election Commission, a total of 1,059 nomination forms were initially submitted. Out of these, 561 nomination papers were rejected, and 16 candidates withdrew, leaving 483 candidates in the final contest.
The high number of candidates highlighted the importance of the Surat civic election and the political significance attached to the city.
Election Held Under Revised OBC Reservation Norms
The municipal elections in Gujarat were conducted under revised reservation norms for Other Backward Classes (OBC), making the election politically significant for all major parties. The Gujarat State Election Commission ensured a three-tier security system for peaceful voting and counting.
Every political party made strong efforts to attract voters. BJP focused on development and governance, while opposition parties tried to create alternative political space.
The revised reservation system also added strategic importance to candidate selection and ward-level campaigning.
Top Leaders Campaigned Aggressively for the Election
For BJP, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel led an extensive campaign across Surat and other parts of the state.
For AAP, national convenor Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann actively campaigned to expand the party’s footprint in Gujarat.
Congress also fought aggressively as it aimed to regain lost political ground after being out of power in Gujarat for more than two decades.
Despite strong campaigns from opposition parties, BJP maintained its firm voter base and secured a massive mandate.
AAP and Congress Struggle Against BJP’s Stronghold
AAP, which had shown growth in previous urban elections, could only secure 4 seats this time, while Congress was reduced to just 1 seat.
The results indicate that while opposition parties remain present, BJP continues to dominate urban local governance in Surat. Political analysts believe BJP’s strong booth-level management, leadership, and focus on infrastructure development helped secure this massive win.
The opposition now faces the challenge of rebuilding support in one of Gujarat’s most politically important cities.
BJP’s Saffron Fortress Remains Strong in Surat
The Surat Municipal Corporation Election 2026 has once again proven BJP’s unmatched political strength in the city. Winning 115 out of 120 seats gives the party overwhelming control over civic administration and reinforces Surat as one of BJP’s strongest urban fortresses in Gujarat.
As BJP prepares to form the municipal board once again, the focus will now shift toward governance, development, and fulfilling public expectations in the rapidly growing city of Surat.
