Surat: Gujarat Health Minister Praful Pansheriya has stepped up efforts to address the growing issue of plastic and hotmix waste disposal in several parts of Surat. The minister held a virtual review meeting with senior officials of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) to discuss a practical and sustainable solution to the problem.
The discussion focused on maintaining cleanliness and proper waste management in the city while ensuring that the livelihoods of small traders, artisans and workers involved in related activities are not adversely affected.
Hotmix waste disposal issue in several Surat areas
The issue has particularly emerged in areas including Puna-Simada, Sarthana, Varachha, Limbayat and Katargam, where concerns have been raised regarding the disposal of plastic and hotmix waste.
Hotmix waste is primarily associated with industrial waste generated during certain manufacturing and processing activities. The material can include plastic-related waste and other residues that require proper collection, segregation and disposal. With the volume of such waste becoming a concern in residential and mixed-use areas, the need for a designated disposal mechanism has gained importance.
Minister calls for balance between cleanliness and livelihoods
During the virtual review meeting, Minister Praful Pansheriya discussed the issue with senior SMC officials and emphasised the need to find a solution that addresses both urban cleanliness and the economic interests of small businesses and artisans.
According to the discussion, simply removing such activities from residential areas could affect people who depend on them for their livelihood. Therefore, the authorities are exploring a solution that can provide an organised location for waste disposal without creating additional difficulties for local workers.
The approach is aimed at ensuring that waste generated from plastic and hotmix-related activities does not accumulate in residential neighbourhoods or create sanitation concerns.
SMC may allocate a separate plot for waste disposal
One of the key proposals discussed during the meeting was the possibility of the Surat Municipal Corporation allocating a separate plot for the disposal of plastic and hotmix waste in the coming period.
A designated plot could provide a more organised mechanism for collecting and managing such waste. It could also help prevent waste from being disposed of at unsuitable locations across residential and commercial areas. The proposal is expected to provide relief to small operators and families involved in these activities while allowing the civic administration to exercise better control over waste management.
Focus on practical waste management solution
The discussions between the minister and SMC officials indicate that the administration is looking for a practical solution rather than taking measures that could unintentionally affect the livelihoods of local communities.
Proper segregation, collection and disposal of industrial and plastic-related waste are important for maintaining a cleaner urban environment.
