Ahmedabad Auto Rickshaw Strike: Daily commuters across Ahmedabad faced major inconvenience as nearly one lakh auto rickshaws stayed off the roads following a two-day strike called by a section of auto-rickshaw unions. The protest was launched against repeated CNG price hikes by Adani Total Gas Limited (ATGL) and the delay in implementing revised auto-rickshaw fares.
According to auto-rickshaw drivers, the latest ₹4 per kg increase in CNG prices has significantly increased operating costs, making it difficult to sustain their livelihood. Although authorities had earlier discussed revising auto fares, drivers claim the official notification has not yet been issued, preventing them from legally charging higher fares.
The strike is expected to affect students, office-goers, railway passengers, and people travelling to hospitals, as auto-rickshaws remain one of Ahmedabad’s primary modes of last-mile transport. Several commuters were forced to rely on buses, cabs, and app-based ride services.
The protesting unions have demanded an immediate rollback of CNG price hikes and the prompt publication of the pending fare revision notification. However, not all auto unions have joined the protest, resulting in limited services in some parts of the city.
Driver representatives warned that if their demands are not addressed, they may intensify their agitation in the coming days. Meanwhile, authorities are monitoring the situation as thousands of commuters continue to face transportation challenges.
