Vadodara took a major step towards becoming a future-ready urban and industrial hub as the state government and Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) jointly organized a regional seminar on “High-Speed Rail Corridor as a Catalyst for Economic Growth & Regional Development” at GSFC University.
The event witnessed the presence of Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar, who announced major infrastructure and urban development initiatives for Gujarat, including ₹6,475 crore in central assistance under the Urban Challenge Fund and highlighted India’s rapidly expanding metro and high-speed rail network.
Vadodara to Become a Key High-Speed Rail and Logistics Hub
Addressing the gathering, Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said Vadodara is not only an important station on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (Bullet Train) corridor but is also poised to become one of western India’s strongest manufacturing, logistics, services, and innovation hubs. He emphasized that modern transport infrastructure directly contributes to economic growth, employment generation, and regional development.
Gujarat to Receive ₹6,475 Crore Under Urban Challenge Fund
One of the biggest announcements during the seminar was the allocation of ₹6,475 crore in central assistance for Gujarat under the Urban Challenge Fund.
According to the Union Minister:
- Gujarat will receive ₹6,475 crore from the Centre.
- The funding will facilitate development projects worth nearly ₹25,900 crore across the state.
- The projects aim to strengthen urban infrastructure, mobility, sustainability, and public services.
India to Become World’s Second Largest Metro Network by 2030
Highlighting India’s rapid infrastructure growth, Khattar said the country currently operates 1,155 km of metro rail, while another 900 km is under construction. He expressed confidence that by 2029-30, India’s metro network will exceed 2,000 km, making the country the second-largest metro rail network in the world, ahead of the United States.
The minister also spoke about the successful implementation of the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) and confirmed that six additional RRTS corridors have already been approved.
Seven New High-Speed Rail Corridors Planned
Speaking about India’s future transport vision, Khattar said the Union Budget 2026-27 has proposed seven new High-Speed Rail Corridors covering nearly 4,000 km. He described the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project as a transformational initiative that will significantly boost industrial development, connectivity, and regional economic growth.
Vadodara Gets 250 Electric Buses
As part of the government’s green mobility initiatives, the Union Minister announced that Vadodara has been allotted 250 electric buses.
During the event:
- 30 new electric buses were officially flagged off.
- The initiative aims to promote environmentally friendly public transport.
- The buses will strengthen the city’s sustainable urban mobility network.
Four Major MoUs Signed for Education and Sports Development
Several important Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed during the event to strengthen Vadodara’s education and sports ecosystem.
The agreements include:
- Dhanraj Pillay Sports Academy with VMC and VSPF
- Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU) and VMC
- Parul University and VMC
- Navrachana University and VMC
These collaborations are expected to promote skill development, academic partnerships, sports infrastructure, and youth engagement.

The Union Minister also released several publications showcasing Vadodara’s urban development achievements.
The books include:
- Vadodara Urban Achievements
- Heritage of Vadodara
- City Logistics Plan (Vadodara, Ahmedabad & Gandhinagar)
These publications highlight the city’s progress in infrastructure, heritage conservation, logistics planning, and sustainable urban development.
Mayor Highlights Vadodara’s Sustainable Development
Vadodara Mayor Geeta Makwana highlighted the city’s recent achievements in urban development.
She noted that Vadodara has successfully implemented several landmark projects, including:
- Asia’s first globally certified Municipal Green Bond
- Blue Bond initiatives
- PM e-Bus Service
- Iconic road development projects
- Environment-friendly urban infrastructure
She said these initiatives are helping transform Vadodara into one of Gujarat’s most progressive cities.
Gujarat’s Vision for Viksit Bharat 2047
The Union Minister called upon industries, educational institutions, and investors to actively participate in India’s journey towards Viksit Bharat 2047.
He also referred to Gujarat’s preparations for hosting the 2036 Olympic Games and the 2030 Commonwealth Games, describing them as major opportunities for investment, infrastructure expansion, and global recognition.
