India’s first bullet train project moves closer to operations as the initial opening stretch is expanded from around 50 km to 100 km
Surat-Vapi Bullet Train Update: India’s first bullet train project has received a major update, with the first operational stretch of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor being expanded to around 100 km between Surat and Vapi.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the change during a Cabinet briefing on September 9, 2026. The first section had earlier been planned between Surat and Bilimora, covering roughly 50 km. The revised plan will cover the longer Surat-Vapi stretch.
The development is significant for Gujarat, particularly Surat and South Gujarat, as the region is expected to become the starting point for India’s first high-speed rail service.
Surat-Vapi Section to Become the First Operational Stretch
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project covers approximately 508 km, connecting major cities across Gujarat and Maharashtra.
The Surat-Vapi portion is about 97 km, and major civil construction work on this section has already reached an advanced stage. According to information presented by the Centre, civil works including river bridges on the Surat-Vapi section have been completed, while track-related work is progressing.
With the latest announcement, this section is now expected to form the first major operational stretch of the bullet train corridor. The government has targeted completion of construction work on the Vapi-Surat section by December 2026, after which testing and other railway systems will progress.
Surat-Vapi Bullet Train Testing Expected in 2027
Alongside infrastructure development, work on India’s first indigenous high-speed train is also moving ahead.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the body frame of India’s first domestically manufactured bullet train has been completed and sent for a series of tests. The train is expected to reach the tracks for testing around May or June 2027. The testing process is expected to continue for several months before the train enters commercial service.
Earlier reports had indicated that the first indigenous B28 trainset would be used on the initial Surat-Vapi stretch of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor.
What Is the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project?
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project is India’s first dedicated high-speed rail corridor. The approximately 508-km route is planned to connect Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati. The project is designed to introduce high-speed rail technology to India while creating new connectivity between Gujarat and Maharashtra.
Why Surat and Vapi Are Important
The Surat-Vapi Bullet Train stretch has become one of the most advanced portions of the corridor.
For South Gujarat, the project is expected to provide a new high-speed transportation option connecting important industrial and commercial centres. Surat, Vapi, Valsad and surrounding areas are also located along one of Gujarat’s major economic corridors. The first opening of this section would therefore mark an important operational milestone for the entire Mumbai-Ahmedabad project.
What Happens After the Surat-Vapi Stretch?
The Surat-Vapi Bullet Train section is only the beginning of the larger Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail network.
Further sections will require completion of civil structures, tracks, electrical systems, signalling, telecommunications and trainset-related work before the entire corridor can become operational. The Centre has previously stated that the exact completion schedule for the full project depends on the completion and integration of these different systems.
Bullet Train 2027: What Passengers Can Expect
If the current schedule progresses as announced, 2027 could become a landmark year for India’s high-speed rail network.
The initial Surat-Vapi operation would allow passengers to experience India’s first bullet train service before the entire Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor is completed. For Surat and South Gujarat, the development also puts the region at the centre of India’s first high-speed rail rollout.
