Surat’s biggest Infrastructure Project Update
In a massive boost to urban mobility in Gujarat’s diamond city, the Surat Metro Rail Project has achieved a significant milestone, with over 75% of the total construction work now completed. Marking a historic day for the city’s infrastructure, trial runs for the 6.5 km stretch of Corridor-2 (East-West Corridor) have officially commenced today.
Project Overview and Financial Scope
The Surat Metro project is a monumental undertaking designed to transform the city’s transit landscape. Under the vision of a “Viksit Bharat,” the project aims to provide modern, safe, and convenient transport for all citizens.
- Total Length: 40.35 km.
- Estimated Cost: ₹12,020 Crore.
- Total Stations: 38 stations across two corridors.
- Key Depots: Infrastructure includes the Dream City Depot and Bhesan Depot.
Corridor-2 Trials: A New Era for East-West Connectivity
The latest development focuses on Corridor-2 (East-West Corridor). The structural work for a 6.5 km section, including 7 strategically located stations, has reached completion, leading to the initiation of trial runs.
These trials are an intensive testing phase. According to official reports from the Information Bureau, Surat, the process involves approximately 500 hours of train running. During this time, the General Engineering Consultant (GEC) and Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) conduct rigorous technical checks on track alignment, signaling systems, and power supply.
The Certification Journey
Following internal testing by GMRC, the project must undergo strict regulatory approvals:
- RDSO Testing: The Research Designs and Standards Organisation will conduct oscillation trials.
- CMRS Inspection: The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety will perform the final safety audit and inspection.
- Final Approval: Commercial operations will only commence after receiving the ultimate safety clearance from the CMRS.
Update on Corridor-1: North-South Progress
While Corridor-2 is the current focus, the North-South Corridor (Corridor-1) has already seen significant testing milestones. Trial runs for the 8.5 km stretch between Dream City and Althan Tenement began on March 29, 2026.
This section, which also includes 7 stations, is currently undergoing various inspections and testing by GEC and GMRC to ensure it meets international standards for passenger safety.
Impact on Surat’s Future
The Government of Gujarat, led by the Chief Minister and Urban Development Minister, is closely monitoring the project to ensure it stays on schedule. As one of the world’s fastest-growing cities, Surat stands to benefit immensely from this network.
- Traffic Reduction: Easing congestion on major arterial roads.
- Sustainability: Promoting eco-friendly electric transit to lower the city’s carbon footprint.
- Economic Growth: Slashing commute times for thousands of workers in the textile and diamond industries.
With 75% of the work complete, the focus now shifts toward finishing station interiors and underground sections. Residents can look forward to a world-class commuting experience in the near future.
