LOS ANGELES / MUMBAI – Christopher Nolan’s ancient epic The Odyssey has solidified its place as a monumental box-office juggernaut, officially crossing the coveted ₹100 crore gross mark in India within its first week while surging toward $400 million globally.
Starring Matt Damon as King Odysseus alongside an ensemble cast featuring Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron, the film is proving to be Nolan’s biggest global opening to date.
A Historic Run at the Indian Box Office
In India, The Odyssey has shattered records for Hollywood releases in 2026. Opening with a massive ₹17.40 crore nett on Day 1, it delivered Nolan’s biggest-ever opening day in the country, surpassing his 2023 Oscar-winning blockbuster Oppenheimer.
- India First-Week Gross: ₹107.72 crore (₹90.30 crore nett)
- Milestone: Second Nolan film after Oppenheimer to cross ₹100 crore gross in India.
- Language Split: The original English release led the charge with ₹66.55+ crore, supported strongly by Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil dubs.
Exhibitors across major Indian metros reported sold-out IMAX 2D and 4DX shows, with early morning 6:30 AM screenings added to meet unprecedented demand.

Dominating the Global Stage
Internationally, The Odyssey debuted to a staggering $264.1 million global opening weekend, recovering its entire $250 million production budget in just 48 hours.
Driven heavily by premium format sales, IMAX screenings alone generated over $50 million globally during the debut, marking a personal record for Nolan and the format. Billed as the first feature film shot entirely using IMAX 70mm film cameras, audiences have rushed to experience the visual spectacle in its intended format.
“The IMAX of it all helped turn it from not only a blockbuster, but a global cultural event,” said Rich Gelfond, Chief Executive of IMAX, noting that many premium screens are sold out weeks in advance.
What’s Next?
With strong word-of-mouth and minimal direct competition until next week’s release of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, trade analysts project The Odyssey to maintain a long, lucrative theatrical run through the rest of the summer.
