Kamla Nehru Zoological Garden, Kankaria Creates a Cool Environment for Animals During Heatwave
Ahmedabad Kankaria Zoo Takes Special Steps: As Gujarat continues to experience rising temperatures and intense summer heatwaves, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has taken extensive measures to protect animals and birds at the famous Kankaria Zoo. Officials at the Kamla Nehru Zoological Garden have introduced several cooling systems and health safety arrangements to ensure that wildlife remains safe and comfortable during the scorching summer season.
The zoo currently houses nearly 2,190 animals, birds, and reptiles. Under the guidance of Zoo Advisor Dr. R.K. Sahu and Zoo Superintendent Dr. Sharv Shah, the management has implemented modern cooling facilities across the zoo premises to maintain a wildlife-friendly environment.
Air Coolers, Green Nets and Water Sprinklers Installed
To reduce the impact of extreme heat, the zoo administration has installed nearly 38 to 40 air coolers near animal enclosures. Green shade nets have also been placed over cages to protect animals and birds from direct sunlight.
Regular water sprinkling is being carried out throughout the day to keep temperatures under control and provide cooling relief to the animals. The arrangements are especially important as Ahmedabad and several parts of Gujarat continue to witness high daytime temperatures during May.
Nocturnal Zoo Equipped with Advanced Cooling Technology
One of the key highlights of the summer arrangements is the advanced ETHE system and geo-thermal aeration facility installed inside the nocturnal zoo section. This system helps maintain cooler temperatures inside the enclosure compared to the outside atmosphere, creating a more suitable habitat for nocturnal animals.
Zoo officials stated that the temperature inside these enclosures remains significantly lower, helping animals avoid stress caused by excessive heat.
Special Diet and Health Monitoring for Wildlife
The veterinary team at Kankaria Zoo is continuously monitoring the health of animals and birds through regular medical rounds, vaccination drives, deworming, and routine health check-ups.
Fruits Rich in Water and Glucose Added to Diet
To prevent dehydration and heat-related illness, the zoo administration has modified the summer diet of animals and birds. Water-rich fruits such as watermelon, muskmelon, and sugarcane are being provided regularly.
In addition, glucose and ORS solutions are being mixed into drinking water whenever necessary to help maintain hydration and body temperature during extreme heat conditions. Zoo officials emphasized that providing proper shelter and hydration is the first line of defense against heatwave-related stress among animals and good more animal also.
Kankaria Zoo Continues to Attract Large Number of Visitors
Despite the summer heat, Kankaria Zoo remains one of Ahmedabad’s most visited tourist attractions. During the summer vacation season, the zoo receives an estimated 3 lakh visitors.
To accommodate tourists comfortably, the zoo remains open daily on 9 AM during summer. Visitors are also being offered online ticket booking and zoo guide services for better convenience.
More Than 77 Lakh Visitors in Last Five Years
According to official data, more than 77.72 lakh people have visited Kankaria Zoo over the past five years. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is also working on developing additional visitor-friendly infrastructure, including a walk-in aviary project.
AMC’s Wildlife Care Measures Receive Positive Response
The special summer preparations at Kankaria Zoo have received appreciation from visitors and wildlife enthusiasts. With temperatures continuing to rise across Gujarat, the zoo’s proactive approach highlights the importance of animal welfare and climate-sensitive wildlife management.
The cooling systems, medical care, and improved habitat management are helping ensure that animals and birds remain protected throughout the harsh summer season in Ahmedabad.
