Even before the peak monsoon season begins, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has intensified its efforts to prevent the spread of water-borne and mosquito-borne diseases across the city. As part of its pre-monsoon health drive, the civic body’s health department carried out an extensive survey covering approximately 5.02 lakh houses and residential premises across Surat within just one week.
Over 14.85 Lakh Potential Breeding Spots Inspected
During the large-scale inspection campaign, municipal teams thoroughly examined more than 14.85 lakh potential mosquito breeding locations across various parts of the city. The survey revealed a concerning situation, with officials identifying 4,427 active mosquito breeding spots, raising concerns over the possible spread of diseases such as dengue, malaria, and chikungunya during the monsoon season.
More Than 1,200 Notices Issued
Taking strict action against violations, the municipal corporation issued administrative notices to 1,243 individuals, including 1,070 residents found responsible for creating conditions conducive to mosquito breeding.
The notices were issued for offenses such as:
- Storing water in open containers
- Allowing stagnant water accumulation
- Maintaining unhygienic surroundings
- Failing to eliminate mosquito breeding sources
Administrative Charges and Penalties Collected
In addition to issuing notices, SMC has also recovered administrative charges and penalties amounting to thousands of rupees from those found violating public health norms. Officials stated that strict monitoring and enforcement will continue throughout the monsoon season to minimise health risks and maintain sanitation standards across the city.
SMC Appeals for Public Cooperation
The Surat Municipal Corporation has urged residents to regularly inspect their homes, terraces, water tanks, coolers, flower pots, and surrounding areas to prevent water stagnation. Authorities emphasized that public participation is crucial in controlling mosquito breeding and preventing outbreaks of seasonal diseases during the monsoon.
