Vadodara Congress Targets BJP Over Women Reservation Bill, Raises Sharp Questions
The Vadodara City Congress Committee organized a major press conference on the issue of the Women Reservation Bill, where senior Congress leaders launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of using women’s reservation as a political tool rather than a genuine step toward women empowerment.
During the press conference, Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee President Amit Chavda strongly criticized the BJP government, stating that the ruling party is ignoring democratic values and policy norms for political gain. He said the BJP is only doing politics in the name of women’s reservation instead of sincerely working for women empowerment.
Rajya Sabha MP and AICC Secretary Mukul Wasnik also joined the criticism and questioned the BJP government’s intention behind introducing the bill without wider parliamentary discussion. The Congress leaders alleged that the BJP is trying to mislead the nation by adding conditions like delimitation and seat expansion before implementing the reservation, delaying actual benefits for women.
Amit Chavda Says Women Empowerment Was Rajiv Gandhi’s Vision
Addressing the media, Amit Chavda said that the idea of women empowerment and political reservation for women was originally envisioned by former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. He stated that Congress was the first party to ensure large-scale political participation of women by helping more than 15 lakh women get representation in local self-government institutions across the country.
According to Chavda, Congress has always supported practical women empowerment, while BJP is using the issue mainly for electoral politics and public image management. He further said that if the government was truly serious about women reservation, it should implement it immediately without hidden political conditions.
Congress Demands Reservation Benefits for SC, ST and OBC Women
Congress leaders also demanded that women from Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC) should receive fair and equal benefits under the Women Reservation Bill. They argued that reservation should not remain limited to symbolic politics and must ensure real social justice for women from marginalized communities.
The party alleged that by linking the bill with delimitation and seat restructuring, the BJP is creating unnecessary confusion and delaying justice.
Congress leaders claimed that this approach reflects the BJP’s “hidden agenda” and political strategy rather than genuine concern for women. They said the opposition has become more alert because of what they described as BJP’s “mismatched intentions” behind the bill.
Sharp Questions Raised on Women Safety in Gujarat
The press conference also focused on women’s safety issues in Gujarat. Congress leaders questioned why BJP leaders remain silent when incidents of rape against young girls and atrocities against women take place in the state.
They asked whether women empowerment can be claimed only through parliamentary bills while ground-level safety and justice remain weak. This became one of the strongest emotional arguments made during the press conference, with leaders demanding stronger accountability and faster justice for crimes against women.
Congress stated that real empowerment begins with safety, dignity, and equal opportunity not only legislative announcements.
Mukul Wasnik Questions Lack of Parliamentary Discussion
Rajya Sabha MP and AICC Secretary Mukul Wasnik criticized the central government for introducing the Women Reservation Bill directly in Parliament without sending it to a Standing Committee or Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC).
He said no proper consultation was held with opposition parties before presenting such an important constitutional matter. According to Wasnik, bypassing parliamentary review weakens democratic discussion and raises serious concerns about transparency.
Congress Attacks BJP and RSS on Women Leadership
Congress leaders also raised questions about women’s representation within BJP and RSS itself. They claimed that RSS has historically given no significant space to women and pointed out that BJP has never had a woman national president till date.
In contrast, Congress highlighted its own history of women leadership, stating that the party has repeatedly entrusted women with top leadership roles at national and state levels. This comparison was used to challenge BJP’s credibility on the issue of women empowerment.
Congress Alleges Model Code of Conduct Violations
Another major allegation raised during the press conference was against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent public speech. Congress leaders claimed that the Prime Minister mentioned Congress 58 times during his address and violated the Model Code of Conduct despite elections being underway.
They also criticized the Election Commission for not taking action despite what they called a clear violation of election norms. Congress described the silence of the Election Commission as highly condemnable and demanded equal enforcement of democratic rules for all political parties.
Leaders concluded by saying that women across the country have now understood BJP’s political strategy and will respond strongly in future elections. The press conference made it clear that the Women Reservation Bill remains not just a legislative issue, but a major political battleground between Congress and BJP ahead of upcoming elections.
