The project was announced as part of the Surat Municipal Corporation’s budget, with the aim of improving the city’s water supply system and strengthening environmental protection.
Advanced Technology to Ensure Safer Drinking Water
The proposed treatment plant will use ceramic ultra-filtration membrane technology along with activated carbon filtration, which is designed to significantly improve water purification standards. One of the key features of this facility will be its capability to remove Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), often referred to as “Forever Chemicals.”
These chemicals are known for their persistence in the environment and can pose potential health risks if present in drinking water. The new plant will include advanced systems specifically designed to eliminate such contaminants.
The 160 MLD (Million Litres per Day) treatment plant will be constructed in Rander at an estimated cost of ₹121 crore.
Additional Water Treatment Project in Variav
In addition to the Rander project, the municipal corporation has also planned to build another 250 MLD water treatment plant in Variav, Surat. This plant will operate with a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) system, ensuring that wastewater generated during the treatment process is fully recycled and does not harm the environment.
The Variav plant is expected to cost around ₹129 crore.
Projects to Be Built Through CSR Funding
Both the Rander and Variav water treatment plants will be developed by Enviro Control Private Limited using Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds. These projects aim to strengthen Surat’s water infrastructure while promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly technologies.
The Surat Municipal Corporation has already inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for several projects focused on improving water supply and environmental protection in the city.
Once completed, these advanced treatment facilities are expected to significantly enhance the quality and safety of drinking water for the residents of Surat.
