Innovative Waste-to-Energy Initiative in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad AMC: In a major step toward sustainable urban management, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has launched an innovative waste-to-energy project by producing biogas from cow dung collected at its gaushalas.
This initiative is not only helping in managing stray cattle effectively but is also contributing to energy savings, making it a model project for other cities.
Biogas Production from Daily Cow Dung Collection
Under this project, AMC collects approximately 10,000 kilograms of cow dung daily from its gaushalas located in:
- Danilimda
- Bakrol
This collected waste is then processed to generate biogas using scientific methods based on the “waste-to-energy” concept. The initiative ensures that organic waste is utilized efficiently rather than being discarded.
Monthly Savings of Over ₹8 Lakh
One of the most significant outcomes of this project is the financial benefit.
According to AMC officials, the civic body is saving more than ₹8 lakh every month through reduced energy costs. This makes the project not only environmentally sustainable but also economically viable.
Dual Benefits: Energy and Animal Welfare
The project delivers multiple benefits simultaneously:
- Efficient waste management
- Renewable energy generation
- Reduced dependency on conventional energy
- Improved stray cattle management
Stray cattle housed in gaushalas are now provided with:
- Safe shelter
- Regular fodder supply
- Veterinary care
This has helped address a long-standing issue of stray animals on city roads.
Official Statement on Project Success
Naresh Rajput, Head of the Cattle Nuisance Control Department, highlighted the importance of this initiative. He stated that the project is a sustainable solution that addresses both environmental concerns and urban challenges like stray cattle management.
A Model for Sustainable Urban Development

The AMC’s waste-to-energy project is being seen as a model for other municipal corporations across India.
By converting organic waste into usable energy, the project aligns with broader goals of:
- Clean energy adoption
- Urban sustainability
- Smart city initiatives
Experts believe that such projects can significantly reduce urban waste while generating valuable resources.
Tackling Stray Cattle Problem Effectively
Ahmedabad has long faced challenges related to stray cattle on roads, leading to traffic disruptions and safety concerns.
Through this initiative, AMC has:
- Provided structured shelter for animals
- Reduced their presence on streets
- Improved overall city management
The integration of animal welfare with energy production makes this project unique.
A Step Towards Greener Future
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation initiative reflects a forward-thinking approach to urban governance. By turning waste into energy, Ahmedabad is setting an example of how cities can tackle multiple challenges with innovative solutions.
As India moves toward sustainable development, such initiatives highlight the potential of combining environmental responsibility with economic efficiency.
This project not only saves money but also contributes to a cleaner, greener, and more organized urban environment.
